Second Announcement
Introduction
The 2nd International Conference on Exotic Nuclei and Atomic Masses (ENAM98) will be held at the Shanty Creek Resort, Bellaire, Michigan, USA on 23-27 June, 1998.
In this mailing we present a call for submission of abstracts, details of the conference registration, and include a preliminary scientific program. So far we have received well over 300 pre-registration forms, most of which contained preliminary titles of conference contributions.
You can use the on-line registration system, but must mail or transfer payment for fees by April 30. If you use the on-line registration you do not need to send a copy of the registration form.
Abstract forms are available in various formats. Click here for a list of options.
Conference Program
The conference will cover the following topics:
Enclosed is a list of invited talks which have been scheduled by the International Advisory Committee (some titles are still preliminary). The program will include an additional 25 invited presentations, to be selected from the submitted abstracts by the organizing and advisory committees. These oral contributions will be allotted 20 minutes, including discussion. The speakers will be notified of their selection near the end of April.
Posters
A poster session will be scheduled for those contributions unable to be scheduled as oral presentations. The poster size is approximately 4 feet high by 3 feet wide (130 cm X 80 cm). Further details will be given in the third circular.
Call for Abstracts (Deadline March 15, 1998)
We request all authors who wish to contribute to the conference, including invited speakers, to submit a one-page abstract of their contribution before March 15, 1998. A book of abstracts will be distributed to all participants during conference registration. Abstracts must be typed on a single page, in the format described by the enclosed template. An abstract template form may also be downloaded from the conference web site at http://www.nscl.msu.edu/conferences/ENAM98/abstract.htm. Abstracts may be submitted either by mail or on a form to be found on the conference web site.
Proceedings
The conference proceedings volume will include the invited talks, the contributions selected for oral presentation, and the posters. Instructions for the preparation of camera-ready manuscripts will be sent with the third circular.
Conference Site and Accommodations
Bellaire is situated in a picturesque location, surrounded by forests, lakes, and cherry orchards. The area is relatively hilly compared to the rest of Michigan, due to glacial action that ceased about 12 000 years ago. Shanty Creek Resort is a popular year-round facility, featuring skiing in the winter and fabulous golf in the summer.
Conference participants will be housed in single or double rooms. The rates per person, including all meals, from Monday evening June 22 to Saturday afternoon June 27 are:
Travel Information
Bellaire is located in northern Michigan (see accompanying map). It is about 55 km from the nearest domestic airport, Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) in Traverse City, which is served by American and United Airlines from Chicago, and Northwest Airlines from Detroit. We will provide bus transportation from the airport to Shanty Creek on Monday June 22 and return on Saturday June 27 and Sunday June 28. If you plan to rent a car at TVC, reserve it well in advance. Bellaire is approximately 6 hours by car from Chicago and 4.5 hours from Detroit.
The conference will begin on Tuesday morning June 23, and conclude on Saturday afternoon June 27. The hotel has agreed to extend the ENAM98 room rates for two nights both before and after the meeting, subject to availability.
Accompanying Persons
For accompanying persons, the rate is $505 (per person), which includes accommodation, all meals, banquet, and excursion. We hope to provide some events for accompanying persons during the week of the meeting. Shanty Creek offers many recreational facilities for families, which are described in a brochure to be included with the third circular.
Children up to 12 years old can stay for free with an adult. Children ages 0-4 can also eat for free, and children 5-12 can eat for $26.15/day.
Conference Registration and Fee
The conference registration fee is $350, reduced to $150 for students. It covers the abstract booklet, proceedings, coffee breaks, conference dinner, excursion, and bus transfers to and from Traverse City airport. Registration begins on Monday afternoon June 22.
Financial Assistance
To encourage students, postdocs, and young scientists to attend the conference, a limited number of scholarships covering the conference fee or accommodation are available. In addition, we hope to provide minimal travel assistance in special cases. Please indicate on the registration form if you wish to apply for financial assistance. The deadline for submitting a registration form requesting financial aid is March 15, 1998. Please note: for those applying for financial assistance from countries requiring a visa to enter the United States, a Business visa is required. No financial aid is available for attendees carrying a Tourist visa.
Payment
The favorable meals and accommodation prices from Shanty Creek Resort are based on pre-paid reservations. We therefore request that you mail to the conference secretary the attached registration form along with payment of your registration fee plus full board accommodation before April 30, 1998.
