Announcement

This year's NSCL User Workshop will start on the morning of Wednesday May 31 and end on the afternoon of Friday June 2, 2006.

The Workshop will focus on both the mid- and long-term future of radioactive beam physics at the NSCL and in the U.S. The NSCL is seriously evaluating its options. There are a number of options, and we are now at a stage that input from the interested user community will be most useful. Clearly the user community needs to be actively involved in the discussions on how to best move the science of rare isotope research forward. Initial thoughts on NSCL upgrade options were presented by Konrad Gelbke to the National Academy of Sciences on March 12, 2006 (see: upgrade options). That presentation summarizes the current (but still evolving) state of our planning.

The Workshop will provide a forum for discussions of the future NSCL upgrade options. Information from a number of working groups that have evaluated emerging opportunities for nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics research with reaccelerated beams at the NSCL will be presented and discussed at the Workshop. The Workshop will be structured to provide the user community an opportunity to discuss the most pressing questions in the field, in preparation for the next Long Range Plan for Nuclear Science. There will be time set aside for breakout sessions that will focus on the questions:

  • What are the most important physics issues that can and should be addressed at the NSCL in the next few years?
  • What developments in accelerator and experimental equipment are needed for the next generation of experiments at the NSCL?

The outcome of these breakout sessions will be presented to the full group on the last day of the workshop and next steps will be discussed.
